The number of single adults over age 50 in the United States is larger than ever. That is good news for older generations who may feel apprehensive about dating later in life. Dating can be interesting, fun and offer positive experiences to those who decide to dive in. Whether divorced, widowed or just tired of being single, now is a prime time to get into the dating game. Many adults, young and old, desire love and companionship and the technology available today to help make those connections is better than ever. More and more seniors are turning to websites and apps to explore dating options. Charley, a widow age 73 and Diana, divorced age 67, met on OurTime. The key relationships of never married, childless older women, that is, those relationships described as central, compelling, enduring, or significant throughout their lifetimes, were explored in this study. We report on types of key interpersonal relationships of these women and also examine limits to these key relations, describing some strategies these women have adopted for gaining kin-like relations and the problems inherent in them for the expectation of care in later life.
Theoretical work by anthropologist David Schneider concerning American kinship as a cultural system is used to explore dimensions of these relationships. While much gerontological research focuses on marriage and parental status of the older person, more than 20 percent of older Americans have no children, and some 5 to 6 percent have never married. Given an alternative set of life paths that does not include affinal and filial relations, never married, childless elderly women may become involved in relationships that are central to them and enduring and that, while nonstandard, are enriching and generative.
Based on lengthy qualitative research conversations with 31 never married, childless women age 60 and older, interviewed as part of a larger project on childless older women, this article has two aims.

It lasted 15 years and gave me two wonderful children — a good run but hardly happily forever after. After a year of getting my new life in order and making sure my kids were doing OK, I started thinking that I was ready to date, maybe even fall in love again. I was used to having a man around so I went about looking for a romantic partner. And here I am, 15 years and a few long-term romantic relationships and several flings later and still live alone.
The living alone part is by choice — like a growing number of older women , living solo offers me a freedom I never had when married. That was one of the many things I discovered about myself at midlife because it was the first time I actually asked myself, what do you want now? Like many singles, I had a somewhat irrational fear of dying alone.
Even long-time married people die alone, like the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who was found cold, pulseless and alone in a hotel bed while on a hunting trip, far from his wife of 56 years, nine children and 36 grandchildren. Adult children are doing nearly half of the daily caregiving for their elderly parents, stepparents and in-laws, and — no surprise — the overwhelming majority of those caregivers are women.
If you are a single woman over 40, you have a love history. You could be a widow and unsure of ever finding another man like your husband. As a dating coach for women over 40, I know finding love the second time around or even the first is not easy. Still, people fall in love every day and many of my clients do find that loving man. I got married in , when I was 20 years old. I was married for 18 years really, 15 years because that is when we separated. And then, after that, I had a relationship with a significant other for 17 years. Doing the math, I was in a relationship for 32 years and single for 42 years. It is my intention to stay single. This bold statement is not as drastic as it seems because I know that I will have male friends or boyfriends until I take my last breath. However, it is not my preference to co-habit with a man again under the same roof or marry a man no matter how much I love him.
Years ago, people used to raise eyebrows at women who chose to live alone. Maybe some people still do. You might think it is absurd for me to plunge head on in the single direction and want to live for the rest of my life in singular bliss. Of course, I might be in assisted living someday, so that would negate my concerted desire to live alone. Every morning when I take my half mile swim in Barton Springs and feel the cold water washing over my body, I give gratitude for the way my life keeps giving me inspiration, fulfilment and joy.
When I practice Yoga, the stillness of my life brings me spiritual sustenance. If you had known me decades ago, you would have seen a woman manically in search of a relationship, in search of togetherness, in search of a soul mate.

What she was searching for was innocent enough: someone who she can have fun with, travel with, and ultimately be in a long-term relationship with. No, thank you.
Single women over 50 are finding themselves frustrated with dating of a year marriage, while Bumble can give an older woman control.
Spinster is a term referring to an unmarried woman who is older than what is perceived as the prime age range during which women usually marry. It can also indicate that a woman is considered unlikely to ever marry. A synonymous but more pejorative term is old maid. Long before the Industrial Age , “spinster” denoted girls and women who spun wool. According to the Online Etymological Dictionary , spinning was “commonly done by unmarried women, hence the word came to denote” an unmarried woman in legal documents from the s to the early s, and “by was being used generically for ‘woman still unmarried and beyond the usual age for it"”.
The Oxford American Dictionary tags “spinster” meaning ” By the s, the term had evolved to include women who chose not to marry. During that century middle-class spinsters, as well as their married peers, took ideals of love and marriage very seriously, and spinsterhood was indeed often a consequence of their adherence to those ideals. They remained unmarried not because of individual shortcomings but because they didn’t find the one “who could be all things to the heart”.
Marry to escape the ridicule of being called an old maid? How dare you, then, pervert the most sacred institution of the Almighty, by becoming the wife of a man for whom you can feel no emotions of love, or respect even? The Oxford American English Dictionary defines spinster as “an unmarried woman, typically an older woman beyond the usual age for marriage”. It adds: “In modern everyday English, however, spinster cannot be used to mean simply ‘unmarried woman’; as such, it is a derogatory term, referring or alluding to a stereotype of an older woman who is unmarried, childless, prissy, and repressed.
Currently, Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines the “unmarried woman” sense of the term in three ways: 1 an archaic usage meaning “an unmarried woman of gentle family”, 2 a meaning related to 1 but not tagged as archaic: “an unmarried woman and especially one past the common age for marrying” and 3 “a woman who seems unlikely to marry”.

When I was younger I got my heart broken by an older woman. No matter what I said, or what nice things I did for Karen, she was out of my league since I was younger. Karen was a 17 year old junior, and I was an incredibly good looking and intelligent 16 year old. This is exactly what my mom told me every time I brought her cupcakes.
It is not a term that I — nor, I suspect, anyone else not coupled-up in their fifties — is that keen on.
